ERMITA, MANILA ─ The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) led by its Chairman Dr. Rene R. Escalante, will unveil the historical marker “Pambansang Aklatan ng Pilipinas” on 11 August 2022, 8:45 a.m. at National Library of the Philippines, Ermita, Manila. The marker states:

                                    ANG DIWA NG PAMBANSANG AKLATAN AY NAGSIMULA NANG ITATAG ANG MUSEO-BIBLIOTECA DE FILIPINAS SA BISA NG ISANG REAL DECRETO NI REYNA MARIA CRISTINA NG ESPANYA, 12 AGOSTO 1887. PINASINAYAAN, 25 OKTUBRE 1891. UNANG NAGBUKAS SA CALLE GUNAO, QUIAPO, MAYNILA AT KALAUNA’Y LUMIPAT SA CASA DE MONEDA, INTRAMUROS, MAYNILA. ITINULOY SA PANAHON NG MGA AMERIKANO ANG PAGBUBUO NG PAMBANSANG AKLATAN NANG PAG-ISAHIN ANG MGA AKLATANG PAMPUBLIKO BILANG THE PHILIPPINE LIBRARY, 20 MAYO 1909, AT NAKILALA SA IBA’T IBANG PANGALAN. Chairman Escalante will officially turn over the marker to National Library of the Philippines (NLP) Executive Director Cesar Gilbert Q. Adriano. NLP Deputy Executive Director Edgardo B. Quiros and NHCP OIC-Executive Director Carminda R. Arevalo will stand as witnesses during the signing of the certificate of transfer.

Executive Director Adriano will deliver his acceptance message after the signing of the certificate of transfer.

The National Library of the Philippines will also open an exhibit in line with the NLP’s 135th founding anniversary.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
