On 12 June 2020, the nation will commemorate the 122nd Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence with the theme “Kalayaan 2020: Tungo sa Bansang Malaya, Nagbabayanihan, at Ligtas” (Kalayaan 2020: Towards a Free, United, and Safe Nation). There will be simultaneous flag raising and wreath laying rites in various areas associated with our independence, including the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine (Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo) in Kawit, Cavite; and the Barasoain Church Historical Landmark (Museo ng Republika ng 1899) in Malolos, Bulacan. The main commemoration will be held at the Rizal Monument, Rizal Park, Manila, at 8:00 in the morning.
The commemorative rites will pay tribute not only to the heroes of the Philippine Revolution but also to our courageous frontliners whose altruism and dedication have inspired our countrymen during our battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. The whole event will be aired by the PCOO and livestreamed on the NHCP Facebook account. We invite all Filipinos to watch it at home on their TV screens or social media accounts. Those who will watch it on Facebook are encouraged to post pictures with the comment, “Maraming salamat, frontliners!” We can also spend the holiday by watching the audiovisual presentations and documentaries produced by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHCP and the Technical Working Group (TWG) for Independence Day have taken precautionary measures as part of the health standards required by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID). We encourage Local Government Units, where similar commemorative rites will be held, to adopt similar measures depending on the classification of their locality. The event in Rizal Park is strictly by invitation and not open to the public.
