Last Friday, 12 March 2021, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines formally turned over the newly-completed Museo Sorsogon to the Sorsogon Provincial Government.
NHCP Chairman Rene R. Escalante presented the Certificate of Turn-over to Governor Francis Joseph G. Escudero. Prior to this, the facility was blessed by Sorsogon Bishop Jose Alan V. Dialogo.
The inauguration of the museum was also attended by Deputy Speaker Evelina G. Escudero, National Museum of the Philippines Director-General Jeremy R. Barns, Sorsogon Vice Governor Manuel L. Fortes, Jr., Sorsogon City Mayor Ma. Ester E. Hamor, and other local government officials.
The NHCP managed the curatorial development of the new museum and restored the ‘Iustitia’ mural in Gallery 8. It also facilitated the loans of important artifacts from the National Museum of the Philippines.
The museum is located at the Old Provincial Jail which was restored by the Department of Public Works and Highways. The yard was also converted into an ampitheater with two coffee shops to make the museum more sustainable.
The museum opens to the public on Monday, 15 March. Admission is free but visitors are required to schedule their visits to prevent overcrowding in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
