MANILA – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) together with the Cultural Affairs Office of Adamson University Manila will open the traveling exhibit ‘Tagubilin: Life Lessons of Gregoria de Jesus’ on 6 May 2025 at the Adamson University Art Gallery on Tuesday, 3:00 p.m. This event is in celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Gregoria ‘Oriang’ de Jesus on 9 May 2025, and can be viewed until 6 June 2025.
The exhibit was already shown at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Manila, University of the Philippines Manila, and San Pedro Laguna. A memorial lecture on Oriang’s life will also be conducted on 8 May 2025 at the NHCP Central Office by the Caloocan Historical and Cultural Studies Association. Commemoration events will be conducted on 9 May at her gravesite in the Manila North Cemetery, Bahay Nakpil-Bautista Manila, San Pedro, Laguna where Oriang briefly stayed, and in Caloocan City where she was born.
Known as the “Lakambini ng Katipunan”, Gregoria de Jesus was more than a wife, first to Andres Bonifacio and later to Julio Nakpil or a mother to National Artist for Architecture, Juan Nakpil. Ka Oriang stood up against the Spanish regime by assisting the Katipunan through the handling of confidential documents for safekeeping. Oftentimes, according to her autobiography, driving in the dead of night in a closed-window vehicle, along the streets of Binondo, to move documents around. These courageous acts, paired with Ka Oriang’s dedication to the cause of the revolution, have earned her a place in the pantheon of our nation’s heroes.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
