MANILA – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Museo El Deposito and the National Library of the Philippines (NLP) bring together the Kwentubigan Lecture Series 2024 with the theme, Story of our Seas: The West Philippine Sea in a Historical and Political Perspective on 5 July 2024, 1:00 PM at the Epifanio Delos Santos Auditorium, NLP Building, TM Kalaw, Manila.
Speakers are Atty. Fretti Ganchoon, Senior State Counsel from the Department of Justice and Ret. Associate Justice Antonio Carpio (2001-2019) from the Supreme Court. Their topics are South China Sea Arbitration: Procedure, History and Importance and Philippine Island Territories in the West Philippine Sea respectively.
A photo exhibit featuring images from the West Philippine Sea by Paul Quiambao, including cartographic treasures from the NLP entitled ‘Pag-asa sa Gitna ng Kalayaan’ will also be inaugurated.
In celebration of the eighth-year anniversary of the Arbitral Award from the Arbitral Tribunal at the Hague this month, and with the West Philippine Sea events escalating, this lecture series is a must-attend for those who seek to understand our rights and maritime entitlements in the West Philippines Sea as provided in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and clarify its history.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
