CALOOCAN CITY ─ The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) with the City Government of Caloocan and Bahay Nakpil Foundation, Inc., will open an exhibit, “Tagubilin: The Life Lessons of Gregoria de Jesus” in line with the 149th birth anniversary of Gregoria de Jesus on 9 May 2024, 9:00 a.m. at the 8th Floor Lobby of Caloocan City Hall (South).
The exhibit will feature Oryang’s noble deeds and sacrifices for the country. This event will also highlight the launching of the “Oryang@150” logo to kick-off the activities in line with De Jesus’ 150th birth anniversary next year.
Gregoria “Oryang” de Jesus was the wife of Andres Bonifacio. They married both in the Catholic Church and before the members of the Katipunan. During the revolution, she was known as “Lakambini” with the task of safekeeping documents, ensuring that no Spanish guards will seize them to take down the movement. After Bonifacio’s death, Oryang then married Julio Nakpil, another Katipunan General and musician who composed music inspired by the Philippine Revolution.
In 1928, Historian Jose P. Santos asked Oryang to write an autobiography where she wrote about her life with Andres Bonifacio and Julio Nakpil, and her experiences in the Katipunan. Before she ended her autobiography, Oryang gave ten advice to the youth on respecting your elders, remembering our heroes, fearing history as it “respects no secrets,” and promoting the union of the people towards independence.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
