The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), commemorated the 126th death anniversary of Andres Bonifacio this morning, 10 May 2023 at the NHCP Museo ng Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio, Maragondon, Cavite.
Wreath offering was led by Honorable Vice Mayor Bernie Ilagan, Councilor Reagan Gulapa, and NHCP Shrine Curator Melanio Guevarra along with Dr. Daisy Distrito Morales, Mrs. Leticia Distrito Morales, and Mr. Marcelito Morales, distant relatives of Andres Bonifacio. Messages from Sangguniang Bayan Tourism Committee Chairman Bonn Rillo and Vice Mayor Ilagan were given in the presence of the community.
Andres Bonifacio led the Katipunan as one of its founding members until the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in August 1896. In the Tejeros Convention of March 1897, he was elected as Director of the Interior under the newly consolidated Revolutionary Government but renounced the proceedings after disagreements with attending delegates.
He and his brother Procopio were later arrested under the orders of the Revolutionary Government where his other sibling Ciriaco was killed in the process. They stood trial before a court martial in Maragondon led by Gen. Mariano Noriel, charged with acts of sedition, treason, and conspiracy to assassinate General Aguinaldo. The court found them guilty and were sentenced to death.
The initial sentence was commuted to life in exile by Aguinaldo but later reinstated after being persuaded by close advisers. On 10 May 1897, the Bonifacio brothers were executed at Mt. Nagpatong, Maragondon, Cavite. His death greatly demoralized revolutionaries amid continued resistance against the Spanish and immortalized his name as a symbol and rallying point for Filipinos of future generations to struggle for freedom and justice.
The NHCP is the national agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine historical heritage through research and publication, conservation, heraldry and administration of historic sites and structures.
