CALOOCAN CITY ─ Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, representing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., will lead the commemoration of the 161st Birth Anniversary of Andres Bonifacio on 30 November 2024, 8:00 AM at the Bonifacio National Monument, Caloocan City. Exec. Sec. Bersamin will be joined by NHCP Chairperson Regalado Trota Jose Jr., Caloocan 1st District Representative Oscar G. Malapitan, 2nd District Representative Mitzi Cajayon-Uy, 3rd District Representative Dean Asistio, and Caloocan City Mayor Dale Gonzalo Malapitan.

The commemoration calls to remind Filipinos with solidarity as the binding factor for freedom and development, with the theme ‘Pagkakaisang Pilipino: Pundasyon ng Malaya at Maunlad na Bayan.’

Andres Bonifacio, also known as ‘Supremo,’ is one of the Philippines’ national heroes. He co-founded the Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangan, Katipunan ng mga anak ng Bayan or the KKK in 1892 and later became the leader of this underground organization that sought to liberate the country from Spanish colonial rule. The movement initiated the Filipino Revolution then and ultimately won Philippine independence from Spain in 1898.

The birth anniversary of Bonifacio was made a holiday by virtue of Act No. 2946 passed by the Philippine Legislature and approved by Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison on 16 February 1921. It was considered as National Heroes Day until it was created as a separate holiday through Act No. 3827 (28 October 1931).

Bonifacio Day is the second-oldest history-based national holiday, following Rizal Day which was created by a decree of President Emilio Aguinaldo on 20 December 1898.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
