BALAYAN, BATANGAS – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) together with the Municipal Government of Balayan, Batangas and Batangas History Society will commemorate the 75th death anniversary of Galicano Apacible on 22 March 2024, at 8:00 a.m., Plaza Rizal in Balayan, Batangas.
The national anthem will be led by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and flowers will be offered by the Municipal Government of Batangas, the NHCP, Batangas History Society and descendants of Galicano Apacible. For the second part of the program, welcome remarks will be delivered by Municipal Vice Mayor Efren Chavez, followed by a message from NHCP Executive Director Carminda A. Arevalo. Mr. Tranquilino Atienza, President of the Batangas History Society will share an overview on the life and works of Galicano Apacible followed by a response from descendant Ms. Charito Apacible. To close the program, Balayan Municipal Mayor Emmanuel Salvador Fronda II will impart a speech.
Galicano Apacible studied medicine in Europe and while abroad, co-founded La Solidaridad with Dr. Jose Rizal. He had an indispensable role in the 1898 revolution as the Chairman of the Filipino Central Committee in Hong Kong where he oversaw securing arms and ammunition for the revolutionaries. Shortly after Gen. Aguinaldo’s capture in Isabela, Apacible returned to the Philippines in 1903 and practiced medicine. He served at the San Lazaro Hospital before getting elected as Governor of Batangas. Apacible is remembered as a distinguished son of Batangas who served his country as a patriot, student-reformist, defender of the First Philippine republic, and a reputable statesman.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
