Lubao, Pampanga – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) – Museo at Aklatan ni Diosdado Macapagal will conduct an online lecture titled “Arte de Lengua: The History of Capampangan Language” on 10 May 2024, 10:00 AM via the museum’s FB page with Mr. Aaron Gaerlan Dalusung Rivera as resource speaker.
One of the eight major languages of the Philippines, Kapampangan is spoken by the locals of Pampanga; in four towns of Tarlac namely Bamban, Concepcion, Tarlac City and Capas; in the town of Cabiao, Nueva Ecija; in Dinalupihan and Hermosa of Bataan; and including the barangays of Calaguiman and Mabatang in Samal and Abucay respectively.
During the Spanish colonial period, the Augustinian friars made the earliest linguistics studies in manuscript form along with their evangelical missions in the province. Diego Ochoa’s “Arte, Vocabulario, y Confessionario Pampango,” was the first recorded pedagogical grammar in Kapampangan. Francisco Coronel wrote, “Reglas para aprender el idioma Pampango”, “Arte y reglas de la lengua Pampanga”, and “Catecismo Pampango Arte y Vocabulario del mismo idioma.” However, the most significant linguistic work was written by Diego Bergano “Arte de la lengua Pampanga,” first published in 1729.
The lecture aims to reintroduce the history of Kapampangan language, its significance in Philippine history and the importance of preserving local knowledge to the new generations of Kapampangans. This event is in celebration of National Heritage Month with the theme “Championing Heritage: Capacity Building to Transform Communities.”
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine history and heritage through its administration of national shrines, museums, research and publication, heraldry, conservation, and marking of historic sites and structures.
