Apolinario Mabini was born on 23 July 1864 at Barrio Talaga in Tanauan, Batangas. He was a member of the La Liga Filipina, and later, the Katipunan. He was a key figure of the Philippine Revolution even if his legs were paralyzed by polio. Mabini’s works, El Verdadero Decalogo and Programa Constitucional dela Republica Filipina became instrumental in the drafting of what would be known as the Malolos Constitution.
When the Philippine-American War broke out, he fled to Nueva Ecija but was captured by the Americans and kept a prisoner of war until 23 September 1900. From then on, Mabini resided in a nipa house in Nagtahan, Manila and earned by writing for local newspapers. One of his articles caused his rearrest and he was deported to Guam along with other Filipino patriots. When he returned to the Philippines, he was offered a high position in government which he refused. Mabini died at an early age of 39 on 13 May 1903 due to cholera.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
