Lubao, Pampanga – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines – Museo ni Jose B. Lingad (NHCP-MJBL) will conduct an on-site lecture titled “Isports, Kolonyalismo at Nasyonalismo sa Pilipinas” on 25 February 2023 at 10:00 to 11:30 A.M. The on-site lecture will also be streamed live via the museum’s FB Page. Resource speaker for this activity will be Professor Roderick C. Javar, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines, Los Banos, Laguna (UPLB).
Aside from education, one of the positive contributions of the American occupation in the Philippines is the introduction of sports such as basketball, baseball and boxing. However, American colonizers used these sports to entertain Filipinos and cover-up abuses and violence brought about by the American colonial rule.
This lecture gives importance to Filipino athletes in bringing honor to our country while discussing Filipino values of determination, fortitude, and hard work in playing these games. Further, these sports competitions also serve as opportunities like when Jose B. Lingad got a university scholarship and joined the University of the Philippines Boxing team in training for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine history and heritage through its administration of national shrines, museums, research and publication, heraldry, conservation, and marking of historic sites and structures.
