General Miguel Malvar took control over all Filipino forces after American soldiers captured President Emilio Aguinaldo in Palanan, Isabela on 23 March 1901. Malvar tenaciously continued the war against the United States until his soldiers were decimated by hunger and disease, especially because of the hamlet  ing of Batangas province by U.S. forces under the command of General Franklin J. Bell. On 16 April 1902, Malvar surrendered, one of the last Filipino generals to do so.

Malvar was born on 27 September 1865 in Santo Tomas, Batangas, and grew up to be an industrious businessman and farmer. He joined the Katipunan and during the Philippine Revolution, participated in battles in Batangas and Cavite. Accompanying Aguinaldo during his exile in Hong Kong, Malvar was entrusted with the revolution’s funds.

With the resumption of the revolution in 1898, he captured the provincial capital of Tayabas. During the war against the Americans, Malvar was appointed division general of the Southern Luzon forces and led his troops in battles in Batangas and Laguna. After his surrender, Malvar resumed his agricultural and commercial pursuits, but passed away on 13 October 1911 at the age of 46.

Towering above the Museo ni Miguel Malvar in Santo Tomas, Batangas is the 60-foot pylon and bronze statue of the noble general by National Artist Napoleon Abueva, a tribute to Malvar’s courageous resistance against foreign rule and dedication to Filipino freedom.

Batangas during the War against the United States Facsimiles of letters, news clippings and old photographs provide witness accounts of events in Batangas during the war against the United States. Another unique feature is a rotating 3D photo-viewer that shows images of the American campaign against Filipino revolutionaries
