Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso and National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chairman Dr. Rene R. Escalante unveiled the historical marker on Thursday, 3 June 2021, in memory of the heroes and martyrs of the Battle of Bangkusay on 3 June 1571. 

The marker is installed at Plaza Moriones in Tondo, Manila which is not far from the Bangkusay estuary where a young leader from Macabebe, Pampanga led a group of warriors against Spanish soldiers. The marker reads:

The unveiling of the marker was followed by the premiere of an audiovisual presentation about the Battle of Bangkusay and an online lecture by Mr. Ian Christopher Alfonso, Senior History Researcher of the NHCP and author of The Nameless Hero: Revisiting the Sources on the First Filipino Leader to Die for Freedom published by the Holy Angel University – Center for Kapampangan Studies in 2016. Mr. Alfonso’s book is the most comprehensive study on the events surrounding the Battle of Bangkusay and the nameless hero who led the native warriors.

Alfonso’s lecture is the first of a series of lectures organized by the National Quincentennial Committee and the City of Manila to commemorate the Battle of Bangkusay and Manila’s 450th founding anniversary as a city and observe of the Year of Filipino Pre-Colonial Ancestors.
