Madridejos, formerly called Lawis (also spelled Lauis or Lamis), was previously a visita of the town of Bantayan. A document signed by Governor-General Valeriano Weyler, dated 31 May 1889, was found in the Erección de Pueblos referring to the establishment of Madridejos into an independent civil town.

During the American Period, Madridejos was put under the town of Bantayan, until it was separated and reorganized into an independent municipality by virtue of Executive Order No. 97, signed by Gov. Gen. Francis Burton Harrison on 23 December 1916 and took effect on 1 January 1917.
