G. DEL PILAR, ILOCOS SUR ─ The National Historical Commission of the Philippines joined the Municipality of Gregorio Del Pilar, Provinces of Ilocos Sur & Bulacan, and the whole nation in paying homage to the heroism and sacrifice of brave men led by Gen. Gregorio Del Pilar during the Battle of Tirad Pass on 2 December 2024, that coincided with the 125th anniversary of the historic battle.
NHCP Chair Regalado Trota Jose, Jr. offered a wreath at the Tirad Pass National Shrine alongside representatives from the local government units of Gregorio Del Pilar, Ilocos Sur, and Bulacan. More than 100 participants from across the country joined in climbing the trail at the Tirad Pass National Park where the shrine is located. In his message, Jose emphasized the dedication to service and love of country displayed by Del Pilar and his men in choosing to defend the freedom that they had fought for and won from the Spanish against a new and powerful enemy. Their sacrifice remains as a powerful reminder to all Filipinos of our duty to be better citizens and our responsibility to future generations.
The NHCP also led the formal launching of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Gregorio Del Pilar with the unveiling of the official commemorative logo for the year-long observance during the 3rd leg of the Republika Lecture Series that it held for teachers and locals at the Gregorio Del Pilar Municipal Plaza. This observance is one of three sesquicentennials that forms part of the 2025 Year of Youth in Philippine History alongside the 150th Birth Anniversaries of Emilio Jacinto and Gregoria De Jesus.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
