TANAUAN CITY, BATANGAS – President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. led the country in commemorating the 160th birth anniversary of Apolinario Mabini at the Mabini Shrine, Tanauan City, Batangas on 23 July 2024. The president was joined by Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner, National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chair Regalado Trota Jose Jr., Batangas Governor Hermilando Mandanas, Tanauan City Mayor Nelson P. Collantes, and other officials from the national and local government. After the program, President Marcos Jr. toured the Museo ni Apolinario Mabini which showcases the story of Mabini’s childhood, struggle, and contributions to Philippine history.
Known as the “Sublime Paralytic,” Apolinario Mabini was a nationalist lawyer and intellectual during the Philippine Revolution who served as the primary advisor of President Emilio Aguinaldo and steered the creation of the First Philippine Republic in 1899. His political and nationalist writings helped shape the early years of Philippine independence and the country’s struggle against the United States of America during the Philippine-American War. Captured and deported to Guam, he remained in exile for refusing to swear allegiance to the US. He passed away shortly after coming home to Manila in 1903, due to cholera.
Another commemorative program was also held by the NHCP and the City of Manila at the Mabini Shrine in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sta. Mesa, Manila where Mabini’s Manila home is currently located.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
