TAAL, BATANGAS ─ The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in partnership with the Municipal Government of Taal, Batangas will lead simple commemorative rites for the start of National Flag Days on 28 May 2024, 9:00 a.m.

The Philippine National Police will lead the flag-raising while the Municipal Government of Taal and the NHCP will offer wreaths to the monuments of Marcela Mariño de Agoncillo and Felipe Agoncillo. Mr. Xeirem Kristoffer Medina, NHCP Museo nina Marcela Marino at Felipe Agoncillo OIC, will give the opening remarks followed by messages from Special Assistant to the Mayor Aaron Martin N. Mercado and Assistant to the Municipal Administrator Jovito M. Albufera.

Upon Emilio Aguinaldo’s return from Hongkong in May 1898, the Battle of Alapan was the first military engagement in the renewed revolution against Spain. The Filipinos emerged victorious when the Spaniards ran out of ammunition and surrendered. To celebrate the first victory of the Filipino forces, Aguinaldo unfurled and hoisted it for the first time amidst the applause and cheers of his men. Today, from 28 May to 12 June, National Flag Days are celebrated, culminating in the celebration of Independence Day.

The program will also serve as commemoration of the 165th birth anniversary of Felipe Agoncillo on 26 May and the 78th death anniversary of Marcela Mariño de Agoncillo on 30 May.  She is remembered for making the first specimen of the National Flag along with her daughter Lorenza and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad. Meanwhile, her husband Felipe is widely recognized as the first Filipino diplomat for contacting American and Spanish representatives during the negotiations for the Treaty of Paris in 1898.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
