EDSA, QUEZON CITY ─ The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) with its partner agencies will spearhead the simple commemorative rites to honor the 38th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on 25 February 2024, 8:00 a.m. at the EDSA People Power Monument, EDSA cor. White Plains, Quezon City.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will officiate the flag-raising and wreath-laying rites. Wreath offerors for the event are NHCP Chairman Emmanuel Franco Calairo, Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission (HRVVMC) Executive Director Carmelo Victor A. Crisanto, Spirit of EDSA Chairman Christopher L. Carrion, Bantayog ng mga Bayani Atty. Jose Manuel Diokno, August 21 Movement President Maan Hontiveros, Chino Roces Foundation Ms. Rebecca Quijano, and University Student Government (USG-DLSU Manila) President Raphael S. Hari-Ong. Assistant City Administrator for General Affairs Attorney Rene Grapilon will be representing Quezon City Mayor Josefina ‘Joy’ Belmonte for the event.
After the commemorative rites, Mr. Edwin Cando will perform a medley of the “Ang Bayan Kong Pilipinas,’’ “Magkaisa,” and “Isang Lahi.”
The EDSA People Power Revolution was a series of demonstrations from 22-25 February 1986. It was a civil resistance campaign against the regime of violence and electoral fraud. The peaceful revolution led to the departure of former President Ferdinand Marcos ending 20 years of dictatorship and restoring democracy in the country.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures. It also serves as the Chair of the EDSA People Power Commission (EPPC) by virtue of Executive Order No. 47, s. 2017.
