On 1 June 2021, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines unveiled a historical marker to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Constitutional Convention at its first meeting place at the Manila Hotel, Ermita, Manila.

The marker was turned-over by NHCP Chairman Dr. Rene R. Escalante to Manila Hotel President Atty. Jose D. Lina Jr. They were joined by Senator Richard J. Gordon, Occidental Mindoro convention delegate Ricardo V. Quintos, and NHCP OIC-Deputy Executive Director for Programs and Projects Alvin R. Alcid.

The Convention was convened to replace the 1935 Constitution. The resulting charter used a parliamentary form of government with a unicameral legislature. It was ratified through citizens’ assemblies rather than the usual public vote. Amendments allowed Ferdinand Marcos to remain in power – for a time both as President and Prime Minister – until 1986 when it was replaced by a provisional constitution.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine historical heritage through research and publication, conservation, marking of historic sites and structures, and administration of national shrines and museums.
